Take passengers off the terminal to the plane

Can we send passengers from the terminal to the plane when the distance is very short

Not possible rat the moment, nevertheless  requested numerous times by users. We‘ll have to wait and see if they will incorporate this someday in the future.

So just to be clear if your aircraft is parked right in front of a terminal with no jetways passengers and crew will still have to use a bus for the 10 metre journey they can't just walk across the tarmac?

Yes at the moment, that's the way gsx2 works. They have to implement a complete new path animation, so you can define walking path for the people on gates without bus or jetway. (Like they are implementing for the pushback at the moment). That's why it takes some time to develop. it's not that easy as it sounds, because you have to define a startpoint, where people will "pop up" and a path to the stairs and doors, and that in a natural way with smoothed curves, so it does not look like a horde of zombies entering your plane... I imagine it could give you some headaches to achieve.
