TACAN FSX Replacements
« on: May 10, 2014, 04:44:50 pm »
Jim Stewart released yesterday and today a set of .bgl files that change all of the FSX TACAN beacons located in CA to now include / transmit bearing information. Now military aircraft in FSX which have a TACAN system implemented as well can receive bearing information which before was not possible. This is intended to improve realism in military related aircraft, not civilian. The package includes source files that will allow modifying any TACAN location.

Note that if you tune the related nav frequency in a FSX civilian plane you will now get information regarding bearing which of course is not realistic behaviour, however if this bothers you simply remove the files or don't tune them in; this package is intended to improve realism in military related aircraft, not civilian.

Package available on Avsim.com under name "tacan_us_ca.zip and tacan_us_ca_2.zip"

See below.

The California packages have been removed from AVSIM and replaced with one covering all of the Western US: This is an upgrade as the beacons now allow azimuth /bearing information to be transmitted.

Download is available at: http://library.avsim.net/esearch.php?CatID=fsxscen&DLID=184161

Jim uploaded a package that covers Canada today that should be available 5/14/14. The South East US is expected soon.

Jim Stewart has confirmed that you can shoot a TACAN approach using the official approach plates. His upgraded TACAN's allow you to fly the TACAN approaches without issue. This is a first for FSX and an expansion for military sim pilots to be able to do now. If you need to land at the Mayport NS in FL IFR, the only approach is a TACAN for RWY 5 and 23.

In sims like the Superbug just tune the TACAN approach plate channel and you will have both active DME and bearing to shoot the approach. This channel will be different from the VOR channel for the same TACAN.

In other aircraft you can use the TACAN's VOR frequency from the upgraded TACAN's data and simply tune NAV 1 to the upgraded TACAN's VHF frequency and turn the DME to NAV 1.

The upgrade also takes the signal reception from 40nm to 200nm line of sight as this is the actual distance for the real TACAN. Most TACAN's will have a High TACAN approach plate as well a Low TACAN plate.

Jim Stewart yesterday has uploaded a complete set of fully operational TACAN stations for the US over at Avsim. It is available at http://library.avsim.net/esearch.php?CatID=fsxscen&DLID=184731

This download contains 105 fixed/adjusted/changed navigational aids for the United States to represent all currently active TACAN stations. These navigational aids have all had the bearing component turned on, so that they are completely usable for navigation within the sim. For a small number of TAC's having a UHF Channel in the 60's, the pared VHF frequency is above the usable frequency in FSX. In these few instances it was necessary for the channel to be changed to be useable in the sim. Thus the approach plate published Channel will be different from that used in this download. Otherwise, these few Channels would not be usable in FSX.

Letourn,

Jim has been working on a UK package. Please email Jim at the address listed at the bottom of the Readme.txt file that came with the TACAN US package for the current status of the project.

Good stuff!

Downloaded and installed. Had long felt a need for something as such.
