Bizarre visual issues
« on: December 01, 2009, 05:34:54 pm »
Hey, so I bought and installed KJFK, KLAS, KORD, and KMCO, for an i7 box with Win 7 64. I also have UTX, GEX, REX, WoAI, and MegaScenery Earth for NYC installed.

I placed all airports b/t UT Urban and UT Vegetation in the library - I know I need to do that with landclasses, but wasn't sure if that was the right move here.

All the airports seem OK, but JFK seems bizarre - it's hard to describe, but it looks like pieces are missing or are in the wrong place. On one view, I was looking out at a body of water, and half the screen was a green blur. Also, I couldn't seem to figure out how to start at a gate - when I loaded FSX, all I saw were GA ramps, and I kept ending up parked at a barrier.

Any thoughts on what might be going on? Do I need to disable the default JFK? Or is there some weird interaction with MegaScenery?

Also, where can I find the manuals?

Thx!

When part of a scenery is missing and/or parking positions looks wrong, the culprit is always another AFCAD for that airport, usually coming with AI traffic packages, that is designed for the default scenery so, you need to find out which file is, and remove it.

And of course, you shouldn't move JFK from the topmost positions in the Scenery Library, which is were the installer puts it. At least, not under any scenery that might conflict with it.

Ok, I'll move it back up.

In terms of finding the AFCAD file that's conflicting and remove it, how do I do that?

For FSX, there's the free tool FSX Airport Scannner, that should do it, it's available here:

Thx! I'll do that.

Also, are there manuals available for the airports? I didn't see them in the downloaded files...

Of course there are:

On the Addon Manager, press the "Open Manual" button, it will open your default .PDF viewer with the scenery manual, and if you want to read them without opening FSX, they are installed into the FSX\fsdreamteam\JFK folder.

OK, so I ran the scanner, and the only thing that came up for JFK were the 2 FSD files that are supposed to be there. I also moved the FSD files to the top of the list, and un-checked the MegaScenery Earth just in case...maybe it's OK, but I took 3 screenshots that looked a little strange to me (3 are of JKF, and 1 of KORD, which looks good to me, but when I zoomed out, I was getting fuzzy grass):

Can you let me know what you think?

I don't see anything strange, except maybe a little bit less than optimal texture sharpness but, this is not an error, it's mainly because of system settings AND, even with correct system settings, you'll never have the same sharpness for tarmac and grass.

Reasons why has been discussed here:

http://www.fsdreamteam.com/forum/index.php?topic=1066.0

Note that, in FSX this s less of an issue, because the photoreal background in FSX can have higher res than FS9, but also is more dependent on settings, both video card and in FSX.

Follow that thread, because there are also some suggestions how to set video drivers to get the best sharpness AND, there's a replacement ground detail texture you can download, that will improve the ASPHALT only.

good to know...I'll download the new textures and give them a shot. In terms of the best settings, what do you recommend for a OC i7 with a 285 card? I can prob max out a lot....Do these FS9 settings apply?

- Global Texture Size - Should be at "Massive"
- Texture filtering - Should be at "Trilinear"
- MipMap Level - Should be higher than 4 (default). 6 or 7 works best, some system (very high res screens) might use 8
- Ansiotropic 16x

Yes, they apply to FSX as well. Also, FSX has an additional control for the texture resolution, it should be probably set to at least 60 cm/pixel.
