Spaz...

Good post.  At least they arent abandoning the flight sim arena.  Now, lets see if they go back to an easier to tweak engine in the light of FS9.  Or the ability to get HUD collimation?

I hope they make it possible for FLIR and combat mods in the SDK.

I did an email to Microsoft, and included a 'wish list' for the upcoming MS Flight.

Hope it makes a difference!

It's hard to make a wish list of a product that we still don't know what it really is.

According to official releases "they have taken the "Simulator" out of Flight Simulator. This cant be a good thing

It would be such a shame if that happens.

Maybe they have spent these years connecting thousands of aviation fanatics to brain scanners and making they play FSX while detecting when the peeks of pleasure happen. Using this data they've build Flight, a distilled version of FSX that maximize the flying experience like never before in an abstract, scary and perverted way.

There may be truth to that, except for the brain scanners  ;D

Rumors are this is going to be LIVE based like xbox and the era of the third party aircraft/addon maker is going away. Would fit perfectly within MS's goal for entertainment control through the online marketplace. Get ready for MS-approved DLC only... :/

Cloud...

Thats my suspicion too, and I think for most of us, we will stay with FSX for the forseeable future, I know I will.  Unless someone comes out with a GOOD standalone F-18 sim with a great flight model, weapons, combat, and carrier ops.

Bummer, cause some of the graphics in that movie look great.

That's just a 3d rendering engine.  Doubtful anyone would buy the rights and convert it to a simulator, but it would be nice.

Microsoft Flight to be Free Release this Spring; Closed Beta, New Video Announced Posted by Tim Tibbetts, 01/04/2012

http://www.warp2search.net/news/story/microsoft_announces_microsoft_flight_to_be_free_this_spring_closed_beta_applications_being_accepted.html

"Today, Microsoft Studios premiered Microsoft Flight, a PC game that lets players jump into the challenge, fun, and freedom of flight. Microsoft Flight will be available as a free download this spring, giving players the freedom to fly the skies over the beautiful Big Island of Hawaii, complete a variety of exciting missions, test their skills in flying challenges, or find hidden aerocaches on the island.

In Microsoft Flight, players view the world from above in a visually stunning and realistic representation of the earth, complete with region-specific weather patterns, foliage, terrain and landmarks. Players can choose to take the helm using highly rendered, accurate cockpits and authentic piloting procedures, or simply use their mouse and keyboard to control the plane in an exterior view. More experienced players can tailor the flight controls to match their skill level, making Microsoft Flight easy for beginners while still challenging for the most accomplished PC pilots.

“Many people dream of flying, but few have the chance to experience the fun of exploring the world from above. Microsoft Flight provides players the opportunity to explore that curiosity and interest,” said Joshua Howard, executive producer of Microsoft Flight. “Aviation can be incredibly technical, but we’ve taken great care to build an experience that makes taking to the skies thrilling and accessible for everyone.”

Start Exploring For Free

After downloading Microsoft Flight for free, players can jump into hours of exciting gameplay on the Big Island of Hawaii.

In addition, players who sign in to their Games for Windows – LIVE account automatically receive additional free content, including the legendary Boeing Stearman plane, supplementary missions, and access to Achievements and an Online Pilot Profile. Those looking to deepen their experience can purchase and download additional content that adds new aircraft, regions and customization options. The frequently released new content for Microsoft Flight includes daily aerocache challenges and updates that make every flight unique and fun.

Be the First to Fly the Definitive Light Sport Aircraft ICON A5

Microsoft Studios worked with the personal airplane manufacturing team at ICON Aircraft to give aviation fans the exclusive opportunity to fly the all-new ICON A5 before real-world production starts at the end of 2012. Designed by the world-class aeronautical engineers behind the Voyager spaceship, X-Prize winning SpaceShipOne, and Virgin Galatic’s SpaceShipTwo, the ICON A5 is the “jet ski for the skies,” a high-wing amphibious monoplane with a carbon fiber airframe and a comfortable, automobile-inspired cockpit with space for two. The ICON A5 will be the first aircraft available to players for free in Microsoft Flight.

“ICON Aircraft and Microsoft Flight both share the goal of making the fun of flying accessible to everyone who’s ever dreamed about it. ICON does this by fusing world-class product design with the very best engineering, and Microsoft by combining the excitement of a great gaming experience with the authenticity of a top notch flight simulator,” said ICON Aircraft CEO Kirk Hawkins.

I signed up for the Beta a couple of weeks ago.  I'm very curious about what criteria they are going to use in the selection process because the only information they asked for was some basic demographic info.  Nothing at all about previous Flight Sim or real world experience.

FWIW, Microsoft FLIGHT Beta Application Survey

https://connect.microsoft.com/site1134/Survey/NominationSurvey.aspx?SurveyID=11306&ProgramID=6087

Went through all the application rigamarole to get this:

"Thank you for your interest in beta testing Microsoft FLIGHT. We have received your application and will consider you for participation. If you qualify to participate, we will contact you with all the information you will need to get started." Whatever.

Well I can tell ya. With absolute certainty. There will be A LOT of pissed off people as soon as this drops(if one thing don't get changed) the bright side is that it is DEFINATELY multi core friendly.

Just a few people's comments from http://flyawaysimulation.com/news/4317/microsoft-flight-behind-scenes-at-microsoft-studios/ (http://flyawaysimulation.com/news/4317/microsoft-flight-behind-scenes-at-microsoft-studios/)

Words cannot fully articulate my immense disappointment at this new "game". My least favorite kind of software developers are the ones who make free versions of software then charge everybody for each function they want to unlock. Excuse me for my language, but this is pure BS!

MICROSOFT FLIGHT SIMULATORS R.I.P. 1985-2012

This flight is for teens who don't know carb heat from mag heading.

etc. etc. etc.  :(

I am saying from hands on knowledge. I wish I could just show you. Tell you one thing. The weather engine is bad ass!!!

But I'm not paying for shit,....unless it is another scenery from FsDreamteam.  ;D

If I wanted the best weather, I would go play ARMA.

I wan't an actual Flight Simulator. Not some Xbox POS.

Now, It looks like aerofly FS is one of the few that's doing things right.

Well Arma weather is not that great....For a flight sim Microsoft Flight Hit it right on the head with that SO FAR.  Now the other stuff well....I can't go in further detail, unless it is directly with Microsoft.

From the sounds of things, other than the code being written to take advantage of higher end graphics cards, this is setting up to be a MASSIVE DISAPPOINTMENT. Thanks to the knuckleheads at Microsoft for figuring out how to get the code fixed but now have no outside development.

Wait... Wait... You hear that noise? Its the big Spaceship Vacuum cleaner from Spaceballs SUCKING the fresh air and braincells out of Redmond, WA.

What a letdown... There's freeware out there *cough http://en.spaceengine.org/ (http://en.spaceengine.org/) cough* (not a flight sim I know, but still!), that has a million times more realistic skydome rendering/atmospheric scattering rendering than this new Flight. It actually looks like the same, most horrible awful version, we already have in FSX and FS9...
In a flight sim, you spend so much time within a virtual atmosphere, it is beyond me, why the flightsim developers don't pay more attention on those details... sigh...

Rant over.

Sure the "NEW" Microsoft has indeed found the secret to unlock or I should say unlock the code for Microfoft Only. This will effectively

eliminate all the third party software companies from writing software to add to Flight. No detailed airports no photoreal scenery such as

Megascenery NOTHING. This is just a masked attempt by Microsoft to monopolize any improvements to their "out of the box" Flight.

I have seen the promotional videos and the screenshots and I think the quality stinks. I will be a FSX user for a long time to come.
