Gates too small for heavies
« on: May 15, 2012, 01:04:46 am »
Hi,

I've noticed that at KORD(fsdt), and at most other airports, most gates are too small for heavies.  Gate K18, American Airlines, in real life is used by 767's and 777's, but GSX won't service you there in a heavy.  Usally there is not a gate available, unless you want to wait.
My question is, can you edit a gate at KORD, or any other airport for that matter using the gate editor?  If I can't use the editor, how can I change the cofigeration of the gate?

Thanks,

Papagiorgio

You can use ADE, or AFX to edit the AFCAD for the airport to change that spot into a heavy spot, from whatever it is now.  I had to do this at KSJC, as most of their gate locations said they were too small for a 767 and GSX.  Of course, you need to make sure that there is enough physical space for all the vehicles to show up.

Thanks,

I used ADE on KORD and got it to work on K18 using the airport compiler.  I tried using it on KABQ, doing the same thing.  Everything looked ok but when I tried pulling int the gate, it said "too small".  Did it several times, with the same negative result.  Any ideas what I'm doing wrong?

PS, Hey Virtualli, I'm spending more time looking at the aircraft being serviced than flying.  Great job!

Be sure the parking radius in the AFCAD is larger than half of the wingspan of the airplane you use.

I used the same radius that I used at the kord gate.

I agree about the problem with the gates at KORD. Last summer, we left from K13 to fly to Honolulu on a B767-300ER. The return flight brought us into K16. Unfortunately, the radius of these gates at KORD is set too small for B767 aircraft in the FSDT software. According to the Boeing site, the wingspan of a 767-300ER is 47.6 m. The radius of Gate K13, like most others, is 22.0 m in the .bgl file. That will need to be increased to a minimum of 23.8 m, as will all other B767 gates.

Which gates will that affect? I looked at AA flights out of KORD for the last two weeks on FlightAware. B767-300s used 9 gates -- H15, K7, K9, K12, K13, K15, K16, K19, and L5.

All flights using B777-200 aircraft used just four gates -- K13, K16, K19, and L5. Since the 777's wingspan is 60.9 m, those 4 gates must have a minimum radius of 30.5 m. (Studying the satellite photo on Google Earth makes me think gate L10 can also support B767/B777 aircraft, but I didn't see it used in the last couple of weeks.)

This just affects the AA gates. I haven't checked the International gates in Concourse M, or the United/Continental gates in Concourses B and C.

one more question, the ramps at KORD are all labeled "ramp GA".  This has been mentioned before, but I forgot the reason behind it.
