With the release of V.2 O'Hare it was a perfect time to send off these photos....I deliver concrete for a Chicago based redi-mix company. One of our contractors has a large part of the O'Hare expansion, so I see things you passengers might only see from a distance.....
The photos you'll see are of the new runway on the south side.....10c/28c Some interesting facts......the concrete is poured over a base of asphault thats about 8" in dept, that sits on a base of 3" stone and crushed rock....The concrete it self is over 24" THICK!! So you math fans ......the runway is 150' wide, 12,000ft long and 24" thick.....a few yards/meters of concrete goes in here thats for sure!! And this is only ONE runway!! The two north runways and the south runways still need to go in!!
One last note.....The photo of the runway with the flashing "X" looking west is the old United Cargo building behind that is the Fedex Cargo building and west of that is the famous cemetery all of which are being moved. As of this post the new Fedex building is finished and they are moved in......the old building is in the process of being torn down. The new United Cargo building is done and are pouring the tarmac as we speak....Once these are buildings are torn down and cemetery moved they can complete this runway.....
The photos of the light cans......the smaller shot is for the approach lights.....the much larger one are for the end of runway lights, and the shot of the pvc when completed they are the taix light base.
