binoculars at DFW
« on: September 04, 2011, 01:39:16 am »
I saw these while flying around DFW. Coin operated glasses for plane spotters. Very nice addon virtuali. Gotta say it would have been nicer if that truck next to the fence was a security vehicle.

It makes me wanna get a truck or car and use the airport for other than flying. You just never know what FSDT surprises are added for detail. ;D theshack440 you must also do plane spotting and look around airport grounds.

Funny you should post this. I was just looking thru those at KDFW Monday night. They are actually not coin operated, they are completely free to use. I actually spend a bit of time at that place they call Founders Plaza and snap some shots from time to time. It's not a bad viewing location if the planes are landing on runway 18L or 18R, but if they are taking off or landing on 36L/R then you can't really see much. The UPS terminal is actually a lot closer looking in person that it is in the sim depending on what zoom level you use. Overall it a pretty cool place to hand out if the weather is nice and watch the a/c. That place actually gets a surprisingly large number of visitors as well. The other night there must have been 30 to 40 people hanging out, some eating dinner on the picnik benches and others just sitting and watching. They have a feed to ATC as well so you can hear what's going on.

Kind of funny, but one day I was there watching and some other dude was snapping pics with a real expensive looking setup. I got to talking to him and I made a remark about wanting to go home and jump on the sim and do a flight out of KDFW after being there watching. The guy looked at me puzzled and had no idea what I was talking about. I started telling him about FSX and all the addon a/c and airports, and of course FSDT's KDFW. I showed him the FSDT website on my phone and some screen shots. Needless to say, the guy was totally amazed by what he saw and had no idea that FSX or any desk to sim like that even existed. He admitted than when I first mentioned it, he thought I was talking about some random fighter video game. I exchanged some emails with him after that and he's gone on to purchase FSX and is now getting into simming more than sittting at the spotting location taking pics. He said that the sim has kind of fufilled a wish of flying that he can't due to the expense and his health.

BTW, out of all the FSDT airports that I have been to in real life, the best spotting location in real life I have found is at KFLL near 9L. It's located pretty close to the runway by comparision to KDFW and they also have a speaker with an ATC feed so you can listen. The only thing is, you have to sit in your car or get out and stand since there are no tables or seats and its not as developed a location as the KDFW spotting location is.

The qualitys not great, but here's a few shots of the real thing I took with my phone one day at KDFW.
