Blurred Textures in FS9
« on: August 20, 2009, 07:01:51 pm »
Hi

I always seem to get blurred textures when flying in FS9. Everything below my aircraft is crystal clear but off in the distance its very blurry like I have set the settings to minimal. The textures only seem to render within a certain radius of my aircraft. The same thing happened in FSX but I was able to fix it by changing the value of the LOD Radius to 8.5 instead of 4.5. I looked at doing this for FS9, but there is no LOD Radius entry in the FS9 cfg. Has this happened to any of you guys? If so how can it be fixed ? ( I am running a GTX285 , i7 920 no OC, and 6GB of RAM.)

Thanks,

Dan

I've tried playing around with these three values but couldn't see it actually helping, because like you, I have a high end computer now (well, somewhat high end) and I am put off by the blurry textures.

TERRAIN_DEFAULT_RADIUS=3.500000
TERRAIN_EXTENDED_RADIUS=4.000000
TERRAIN_EXTENDED_LEVELS=232

Or try this (Mine)

[DISPLAY]
UPPER_FRAMERATE_LIMIT=79
TEXTURE_BANDWIDTH_MULT=400
[TERRAIN]
TERRAIN_ERROR_FACTOR=100.000000
TERRAIN_MIN_DEM_AREA=10.000000
TERRAIN_MAX_DEM_AREA=100.000000
TERRAIN_MAX_VERTEX_LEVEL=20
TERRAIN_TEXTURE_SIZE_EXP=8
TERRAIN_AUTOGEN_DENSITY=5
TERRAIN_USE_GRADIENT_MAP=1
TERRAIN_EXTENDED_TEXTURES=1
TERRAIN_DEFAULT_RADIUS=9.500000
TERRAIN_EXTENDED_RADIUS=9.500000
TERRAIN_EXTENDED_LEVELS=5

Also, temporarily try different settings on your graphics adapter. Try setting your anisotropic filtering to high quality and force it to override the game settings by NOT letting the "application decide" on setting.

If you can alter the problem by doing that then it may give you a clue what to maybe alter in your FS configuration.

Well I have changed anisotropic to 16x and changed texture filtering to high quality in nHancer but FS9 can't use AS filtering as far I know it only uses Trilinear. I have had it like this but didnt seem to have a real effect in FS9.  ???

FS9 can't request the usage of the Anisotropic filter by itself, but when your videocard is set to override the application setting, anisotropic filtering will be enabled, at the setting ( 4x, 8x, 16x) you specify in the video card control panel.

Check also your MipMap slider in FS9, because this has a big impact with textures sharpness, try setting at 5 or more, up to 8, and see how it changes.

Virtuali- The mipmap slider I have at 8 already, but I played with it and brought it down to 5 and it seems to only improve texture sharpness like at close distance such as runway and taxiway textures, but the problem with the blurred textures at a distance still remains. The autogen and textures do not render at a distance but its clearly noticeable when flying. Everything is clear right below me and within a close radius of my aircraft, but beyond the certain "radius" its very blurry like nothing has rendered. I can post some screenshots if needed.  :) Thank you for your support.  8)

Ill tell you plain and simple, I have the same problem, FS9 terrain will be crystal clear below you but at 2 miles from that radius is starts to get blurry. There is no way to fix it, its the same way in FSX. The tweaks above help it a little bit like from a 2-5 radius. You just have to learn to suck it up like I did.

Dude theres got to be a way to fix it. In FSX you just have to tweak the LOD radius in the config and its fine everything looks crystal clear even from a distance, but with FS9 being so old I may be wrong about fixing it. Its dissapointing especially because I use FS9 quite a bit due to the lack of several sceneries and aircraft for FSX.  :-\

There is no way to fix it, its the same way in FSX. The tweaks above help it a little bit like from a 2-5 radius.

In FSX the problem is much less, provided of course the hardware is capable enough because the amount of time given to texture scheduler in FSX is configurable ( the FIBER_FRAME_TIME_FRACTION parameter, which is settable in FSX, but is hardcoded at 0.10 in FS9 ) and the actual texture loading process is multithreaded and can use multiple cores. In fact, while having more cores in FSX doesn't really help with fps, but it helps a lot with texture clarity.

In fact, crunk747 said that, with his fast i7, by tweaking the load radius, he was able to fix it in FSX.

So virtuali there is really no way to truly fix the problem in FS9?

No,

I don't mean to change the thread but, have you looked on the box for FSX on the requirements? a GTX280 wasn't even out when it was released lol, or the i7.
