According to the Manuel when in 3D edit mode the Y key is used to exit; unfortunately when I hit "Y"
the aircraft slides all over creation, instead of exiting the editor. And yes, the key IS assigned to toggle
slew on and off.

The problem is caused by your joystick which is not calibrated properly in the dead zone. Either calibrate the joystick dead zone correctly, or remove all the joystick axes from the Slew events from the Control settings of the simulator

Ironically I was having some joystick issues. What are the correct null or dead zone settings?

There are no universal settings that can work with every system and every joystick. That's why there's a setting to begin with. You just have to try.
To fix the problem of the editor, it's best to remove all the joystick axes from the Slew events from the Control settings of the simulator but, of course, you still want to be sure your Null zones are correct, for normal flying.
