Understanding Couatl
« on: September 30, 2018, 12:38:35 am »
Hi:

I am having a problem with Couatl find airports.

I recently downloaded a freeware airport and installed it on a separate SSD outside the P3D root folder.  When I ran the airport mapper, it keeps finding the sims default scenery file.  So, I went into the sim and disabled it.  When I re-ran the airport mapper GSX doesn't display the airport config (mapper) at all.

In short, how do I get Couatl to find the add-on scenery.

Thanks.

We use the same method the simulator use to find scenery, and we support:

- Sceneries added with the add-on.xml method, supporting their layering too.

- Sceneries added in the scenery.cfg files, supporting their layering too.

And, just like the sim, the scenery with the highest layer will be used. However, there are some cases where a scenery might not be chosen:

1) The airport must be self-contained. GSX only reads ONE AFCAD at the time. If a scenery only adds some parkings or taxiways but still relies on the default AFCAD, GSX won't use it.

2) The file might be too big. Some freeware authors like to place everything in the airport file, including textures, making the AFCAD unnecessarily large. GSX will automatically skip files which are larger than what a normal AFCAD might be, in order to speed up the cache regeneration file. You can check and control this, see here:

Hi Umberto:

Sorry to trouble you but I can't find the couatl.ini file.  I've looked in %APPDATA%\Virtuali and nothing there.  I don't know where to enter "airportCacheMaxBGLSizeBytes = 8000000"

Thanks.

Sorry to trouble you but I can't find the couatl.ini file.

If you never change any option that are related to it (for example, enabling logging in the Troubleshooting section of the GSX Settings ), it's normal you won't find the file so, in that case, you must create it.

Be sure you don't save it with a .TXT extension: it must be named Couatl.INI, not Couatl.INI.TXT

Does this entry for the ini look correct?

No, for the following two reasons:

- The file to edit is Couatl.INI not Couatladdons.INI. As I've said in my previous message, if it's not there, you must create it.

- You wrote airportcachemaxbglsizebytes instead of airportCacheMaxBGLSizeBytes. Case matters.

Hello:

Just to make sure I'm doing this correctly:

-I opened a new Notepad ++
-In line 1 I typed airportCacheMaxBGLSizeBytes= 8000000
-I saved the Notepad ++ as Couatl.INI
-I put that file into my %APPDATA%\Virtuali

And the only line/entry required is the "airportCacheMaxBGLSizeBytes= 8000000"

Thanks much!  Sorry, I'm not good at this stuff.

Sorry to be such a pain but I can't get it to work.

I'm uploading pics of what AFCAD should be vs. what GSX is using.  Maybe that will help explain why I can't use the AFCAD I want.

Maybe that will help explain why I can't use the AFCAD I want.

They don't explain anything.

A way to troubleshoot these issues is to enable Logging in the Troubleshooting page of the GSX Settings, and check the Couatl.LOG file that will be generated after you select the option to "Restart Couatl and rebuild the airport cache", it will surely explain why a particular .BGL has been rejected.
